A new film adaptation of the popular American series Miami Vice is in the works at Universal Pictures with Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski on board to direct.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy is writing the script of the remake from an earlier draft by Eric Warren Singer, who wrote Top Gun: Maverick.

Plot details are currently unknown. The original television series, which ran on NBC between 1984 and 1989, starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover detectives.

Interestingly, a film adaptation of the series was released in 2006, directed by Michael Mann, who produced the original series, and starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Though the film turned out to be an average grosser at the box office, it gained cult status over the years.

The new film adaptation is set to be produced by Kosinski through his company Monolith and Dylan Clark through Dylan Clark Productions. Universal’s Sara Scott will oversee the production on behalf of the studio.

Meanwhile, Kosinski is awaiting the release of his racing drama F1, starring Brad Pitt. He ia also set to direct a UFO conspiracy thriller for Apple.
