The Madras High Court on Monday (April 21, 2025) granted bail to drug smuggling accused Bezos alias Jaffer Sadiq and his brother Mohamed Saleem in a case registered against the duo by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) of 2002.

Justice Sunder Mohan granted the relief by taking into consideration the orders passed by a Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice of India-designate Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K.V. Viswanathan in July 2024, while granting bail to former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Initially, it was the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) that had arrested Sadiq on the charge of having acted as the mastermind behind a drug syndicate involved in sending several consignments of pseudoephedrine, worth around ₹2,000 crore, to countries such as Australia and New Zealand.

Subsequently, the ED registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) on the basis of the NCB case, and formally arrested Mr. Sadiq and his brother on charges of laundering the money earned through drug smuggling by producing movies and starting other businesses.
