We had previously announced that Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary are partnering to co-finance the first-ever live-action Gundam film. Now, the latest is that Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney is in final talks to star in the film.
An adaptation of ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’, the film will be directed and written by Jim Mickle, best known for his work on Sweet Tooth. Notably, Mickle also serves as a producer on the project, along with Linda Moran, through their company, Nightshade.
Gundam was first announced in 2021, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts as the project’s original director.
The Gundam franchise, spanning over 45 years, includes 25 anime series, 34 movies, and 27 OVAs, making it one of Japan’s most iconic and enduring properties.
Details regarding the plot and character remain unknown at the moment. This live-action adaptation comes at a time when demand for anime-based content is at an all-time high, but the challenge of successfully bringing animated worlds to life in live-action remains daunting.
Last seen in Madame Web, Immaculate and Eden, Sweeney is all set to star in Apple TV+’s Echo Valley, co-starring Julianne Moore; The Housemaid, co-starring Amanda Seyfried; Colman Domingo’s directorial debut Scandalous; modern remake of Barbarella; a dual role in thriller I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl; and an untitled biopic of boxer Christy Martin. She will also return to the highly-anticipated third season of HBO’s Euphoria, co-starring Zendaya and Jacob Elordi.
