Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor are set to light up the big screen with their upcoming romantic comedy, Abir Gulaal, which is slated for release on May 9. The film’s teaser, released today, offers a glimpse into its London-set storyline, which follows the story of how two broken people come together by a stroke of luck and end up helping each other and ultimately falling in love.

Directed by Aarti S. Bagdi (Chalti Rahe Zindagi), Abir Gulaal is produced by Indian Stories and A Richer Lens in association with Aarjay Pictures. The production team includes Vivek B. Agrawal (Queen, Udta Punjab), Avantika Hari, and Rakesh Sippy.

In 2016, Fawad and others were at the centre of a controversy after the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association imposed a ban on Pakistani artists working in Indian films following the Uri attacks. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena party had threatened to block the release of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and issued an ultimatum to Pakistani artists to leave India. The film was eventually cleared for release by the CBFC. In October, 2023, the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition seeking to ban Pakistani actors, performers and technicians from working in India.

Khan, who previously starred in Khoobsurat (2014) and Kapoor & Sons (2016), has continued to work internationally in projects like Ms. Marvel (2022) and The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022), Pakistan’s highest-grossing film. Kapoor, known for her role in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021), will also be seen in Netflix’s Mandala Murders and the upcoming Bollywood film Badtameez Gill.

Abir Gulaal is set to hit theaters worldwide on May 9.
