Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday (February 18, 2025) took a serious note on the objectional and derogatory content and references about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on Wikipedia and directed the State cyber police to approach the open-source free online encyclopedia to get them removed.

Sambhaji Maharaj has become a talking point in the State after the release of the Hindi film Chhaava, a biographical work based on the Marathi-language novel of the same name. The film released last week to good business and strong reviews.

Speaking to journalists in Mumbai on Tuesday (February 18, 2025), the CM said that the State will not tolerate any kind of distortion of history on an open-source platform.

“I have asked the Inspector General of Maharashtra cyber cell to communicate with Wikipedia officials and ask them to remove the objectionable content and references that are against Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. We will not tolerate such distortions, write-ups on open-source platforms that jeopardise our historical facts. I have ordered the officials to take whatever steps that are required to be taken,” Mr. Fadnavis said.

“Wikipedia does not operate from India, and it is managed by volunteers who edit content and have editorial rights. We can request them to implement certain regulations that will prevent such distortion of historical facts,” he added.
