A24 has unveiled the first trailer for Friendship, an offbeat comedy starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd. The film, set for a theatrical release in May, will first premiere at SXSW on March 9, following its well-received debut at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section last September.
In Friendship, Robinson plays Craig, an ordinary suburban dad who becomes obsessed with befriending his effortlessly cool new neighbor, played by Rudd. However, what starts as an innocent attempt at adult male friendship soon spirals into chaos, threatening to upend both of their lives. The film also features Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra, and Billy Bryk in supporting roles.
Directed and written by Andrew DeYoung in his feature debut, Friendship marks Robinson’s first leading role in a film. Best known for his Emmy-winning Netflix series I Think You Should Leave, Robinson has built a reputation for his uniquely awkward comedic style, which seems to be on full display in this latest venture.
Rudd, a comedy veteran with hits like Anchorman, I Love You, Man, and his role as Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, brings his signature charm to story. With A24 at the helm and strong early buzz from festival screenings, Friendship is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about comedies of the year.
